Google says there is no special markup or extra requirement to appear in AI Overviews: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. In practice, the pages cited are the ones that directly and clearly answer the question, are technically sound, and come from sources Google already trusts for that topic.
- Being indexed and eligible for snippets is the entry ticket.
- Nosnippet and max-snippet controls also limit AI Overviews.
- Clear, direct answers under question headings are easiest to cite.
- Strong classic SEO is the foundation — there is no separate ‘AI Overviews SEO’.
What Google says
Google’s documentation on AI features states that the same SEO best practices apply, that there are no additional technical requirements, and that pages must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet also apply to AI Overviews.
How sources tend to be chosen
AI Overviews summarize information from several web pages and link to them. Pages that get cited usually answer the specific question near the top of a section, use clear headings, contain specific facts, and are technically healthy — fast, mobile-friendly, crawlable and free of errors.
A practical checklist
- Confirm your important pages are indexed in Google Search Console.
- Remove accidental
noindextags and overly strict snippet controls. - Phrase H2s as real questions and answer each in the first paragraph below it.
- Use lists and tables for steps, options and prices.
- Add structured data that matches your visible content.
- Fix speed, mobile and HTTPS issues.
- Keep pages current and show when they were updated.
What not to do
Don’t stuff pages with keyword-heavy FAQs that don’t match what customers ask, don’t publish thin pages for every possible question, and don’t mark up content that isn’t visible. Google’s spam policies still apply.
